Jolly Residence: Sarasota, Florida

info

Located west of Tamiami Trail on Alta Vista Street, the project evolves around the addition of a carport in a style that compliments the existing 1940's Twitchell bungalow as well as the essence of its original architect's work. The carport is located at the rear of the property behind an original tapered 2' to 5' tall semi-circular brick wall. In the spirit of the Sarasota School of Architecture, a single slope roof, with exposed steel beams, steel columns, connection details & tongue-and-groove ceiling, unites the parking area and a 100 s.f. storage unit. Enveloped with corrugated metal, the storage unit serves as an anchor to the thin planar roof and properly balances the mass and void created by the entire structure.

The scale of the carport and the slope of the roof were kept relatively low to avoid overshadowing the main residence. The carport's roof's large overhang projecting above the existing brick wall, curving away and partially screening the existing residence, creates a spatial relationship between these three elements, uniting the old and the new, and erasing the lap in time.
