MULLINS-GINSKY RESIDENCE

RESIDENTIAL: Sarasota, Florida

The Mullins-Ginsky residence is a one-story residence located in the Uplands neighborhood in northern Sarasota County. The 1,750 SF structure has one bedroom with master bath and includes a guest bath, kitchen, living room, dining room, wine closet and study.

The owners asked for a house "in harmony and in proportion to the surrounding outdoors." The house possesses the clean lines of the Sarasota School of Architecture, which interpreted modernism for the Florida climate before air conditioning. It features glass walls, wide overhangs, terrazzo floors, cross ventilation (north/south and east/west) and a strong relationship with the outdoors. The use of space reflects upon classic Florida architecture instead of today's homes where the house dominates the entire yard.

Materials include concrete block partition walls with a steel column structure, wood roof joists, and aluminum storefront and awning window systems. The kitchen features meadow green quartz surface countertops and simple maple cabinets with stainless steel backsplash. Floors are terrazzo throughout. All native trees were saved on site including ten pine trees, two oaks and three palms.
